Hanoi is carrying out a large number of projects to give facelift to the cultural and historical sites in the city in order to attract tourists and celebrate the 1000th birth anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi in the year 2010.

Hanoi has also put forward a programme “Developing culture, building Hanoians in an elegant and civilised manner to mark the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi.”
Hanoi is to develop the culture of the capital city to match with the tradition of 1000-year-old civilisation and the titles “Hero Capital” and the “City of Peace.”
Culture development will be closely linked with socio-economic development. Culture is used as a momentum for socio-economic development. Hanoi has made various proposals to develop culture in a modern way but still rich in national identity.“First of all, the city focuses on strengthening management, restoration and improvement of cultural, revolutionary and historical sites and promoting values of tangible and intangible cultures,” said Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee.
The city invests money to give facelift to the significant cultural and historical sites, including the Temple of Literature; Doan Mon, Bac Mon and Hau Lau sites in the old citadel; King Le statue, Y Mieu, Co Loa and Hoa Lo prison.
The city is carrying out some key projects to the year 2010, including establishment of management board of the Hanoi Old Citadel site. The city is completing files to ask for recognition as a national and world heritage site.
The city is also improving Co Loa old citadel, the southern gate of the city, Hanoi Museum and Hanoi Library and publishing 1000-year-old Thang Long books. Dai Nam and Kim Dong theatres and “City of Peace” Monument are being built.
