The number of investors in Kien Giang Province is increasing sharply from 150 in 2006 to 448 at the moment, including 30 foreign investors with total registered investment capital of over US$3 billion.

Over the past years, Kien Giang Province has attained many important socioeconomic achievements and it is mobilizing power resources, especially households and private sector businesses to invest in local advantaged sectors such as tourism, services, growing and processing of agro-forestry-fishery products and production of building materials.

There are many key ecological regions in Kien Giang Province that are potential for investors and enterprises such as Long Xuyen Quadrangular Region with aquaculture and seafood processing, production of building materials, marine island eco-tourism and border gate economic zones. The Western Coastal Hau River Region is specialized in high quality farming and in freshwater aquaculture associated with processing industry; U Minh Thuong Region with advantages in eco-tourism, aquaculture, cattle-breeding combined with processing industry and mechanical engineering. Particularly Phu Quoc Island that was approved by the Government to develop into a large, modern tourism and trade center of the Mekong Delta region in the Southwestern part of the country.

At a conference on investment promotion into Kien Giang which was held in Rach Gia City, Kien Giang Province in late June, many investors asked the province to speed up site clearance works for the approval of projects and bring into play its potential in aquaculture and industrial plants. The Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee also committed that it would cooperate with ministries, sectors and banks to provide capital sources to expand investment.

Particularly, the province will continue to create best condition for enterprises and investors and keep regular contacts with them to remove difficulties and promote investment and trade both domestically and internationally to expand markets, call for investment and seek partners to carry out projects in the province.

Addressing the conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung hailed efforts made by Kien Giang Province to attract and call for investment which helped to improve the local economy as well as people's living conditions.

Prime Minister Dung also instructed the southern province to focus on developing marine and island economy, especially the Phu Quoc island district. He required Kien Giang, the central authority and investors to promote infrastructure investment, especially in key highways and routes such as the 80,61,63 Highways, the Rach Gia-An Minh and Rach Gia-Hon Dat-Hon Chong coastal waterways.

It was reported that six projects were granted investment certificates at this year investment promotion conference. The projects focus on a number of sectors including house building, rice processing and exports, wood processing, aquatic products, tourism, real estate, rubber, food and construction./.
