National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines will operate flights between Can Tho city in the Mekong Delta and Taipei in Taiwan during Tet (the Lunar New Year) which falls on February 14 this year, Vietnam News Agency has reported.

Many Vietnamese work in Taiwan or are married to Taiwanese men and Tet is the year’s biggest festival in Vietnam during which families traditionally get together even if they live overseas.

There will be one flight each to Can Tho on February 11 and 12 with the airline using a 184-seat Airbus A 321 aircraft.

There will be a flight each in the return direction on February 20 and 21.

Can Tho International Airport, which has been undergoing an upgrade since 2006, will soon receive international flights on a regular basis.

The Southern Airports Corporation has spent VND850 billion (US$46 million) on upgrading and expanding the airport’s runways from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters to receive larger aircraft.

The 388.8 hectare facility came on the domestic air map last year when Vietnam Airlines and budget carrier Jetstar Pacific began flying to Hanoi in January.

The airport expects to receive two million to three million passengers a year when fully functional.

Vietnam Airlines is operating an extra 136 services on major domestic routes this month to meet the surge in demand during Tet.

It flies to 20 domestic and 24 international destinations.
