ImageUp to 35% of the tourism workforce in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam have not been trained, a survey released at a conference in Kien Giang province on Dec 21 showed.

The local hospitality industry employs 250,000 workers, only 0.7% of them are university graduates while the remaining are vocational training and untrained workers.

Currently, the number of international and domestic visitors to the Mekong Delta is still modest because of poor tourism products and unprofessional human resources. Fifteen Mekong Delta provinces offer similar tours of orchards and waterways, participants said.

There are just 18 travel companies in the Mekong Delta, of 629 travel firms in Vietnam.

The number of foreign visitors to the Mekong Delta now makes up around 15% of the country’s total number.
